Sizing Your Diamond Ring

Before you shop for your diamond ring, you should verify your ring size so you can find a piece that is a perfect fit. You have several options when it comes to ring sizing. First, you could place a ring that fits you on a mandrel, one type of professional ring sizer. Alternatively, you could approximate the fit by using a finger size strip or a ring size chart. When you size your fingers, make sure you do so at room temperature, as cold and heat can cause your fingers to swell or constrict. In this post, we’ll discuss your diamond ring sizing options in more detail.

A Ring Size Chart

You can find a ring size chart online or at any jewelry store. You will first need a ring that fits you, which you will then place over the closest size circle. The inner rim of your ring should align with the outer edge of the circle. In the event that your ring fits somewhere in between two sizes, go with the bigger size. Here is a list of ring sizes with their corresponding finger diameters:

  • Size 5: 15.7mm
  • Size 6: 16.5mm
  • Size 7: 17.3mm
  • Size 8: 18.2mm
  • Size 9: 18.9mm
  • Size 10: 19.8mm

A Finger Size Strip

Another option is to use a finger size strip, which you can print and cut from any jewelry website. You will put the smaller end of the strip in the slot that says “cut here.” With the numbers facing toward you, put the loop of paper around your finger and tighten until the fit is snug but comfortable. Note the number to which the tab points.

When to Resize

Most jewelers can easily resize rings two sizes smaller or larger. Adjustments outside of this range can alter the structure and appearance of your diamond ring. To increase the size of a gold or silver ring, the jeweler will have to hammer the ring gently around a sizing shaft. The hammering causes the shank to thin slightly. In some cases, the resized ring will not be exactly round. With platinum rings, you may have trouble finding a jeweler who will resize it because of its strength and density. For rings that need adjusted more than one full size bigger or those that need adjusted with stones, the jeweler may just make an incision in the ring to add or remove extra metal. This adjustment might leave a small but visible seam in your ring and/or an undetectable weak point. However, your jeweler can place these flaws so they are out of sight.
