The Different Colors of Diamonds-Green

The color green can represent anything from nature to growth to wealth. Of course, green is strongly associated with money, which is a very fitting association when it comes to green diamonds. Natural green diamonds are the second-rarest diamond, thus also making them a very expensive type of fancy diamond. In what follows, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about green diamonds, including information about the most famous green diamond in the world.

Origin of Color

Green diamonds derive their color from atomic radiation that damages the crystal lattice of the diamond, resulting in selective absorption. Because radiation rarely affects the entire diamond, truly green diamonds are extremely expensive. Most green diamonds are only green in spots or on the surface of the stone. Finding a diamond that is completely green is a rare occasion.

Varieties & Cost

You can find green diamonds in a variety of colors and shapes. The colors can include light green, greenish-yellow, light turquoise, chameleon, grayish-yellow, and more. Not surprisingly, the deeper, more brilliant shades of green are much more expensive than the paler shades. For instance, a heart-shaped, chameleon green diamond with a 7.72 carat weight can cost over $650,000. Green diamonds come in oval, heart, round, cushion, and many other popular shapes.

The Dresden Green Diamond

The Dresden Green diamond is a 41-carat natural green diamond with a historical record dating back to 1722, when a London newspaper ran a story about it. The stone is named after the capital of Saxony, Germany, where it has been displayed for most of the last 200 years. The Dresden Green diamond is currently being used to compare natural and lab-induced green diamonds. The goal of the research is to devise a test that can discern between natural and synthetic green diamonds.
