Maximillian, the Archduke of Austria, gave his future wife a gold ring with a diamond set in it to show her his love. This is not the start of the diamond ring though. In fact, ancient Egypt is where we need to go back to in order to find out when this started. The Egyptians believed that a vein in the fourth finger lead directly into the heart. This is why the diamond rings have always been worn on that finger. It was to connect love to the heart.

This is often times looked at as the perfect token of love. Diamonds are the supreme gem, because they cannot be flawed by anything other than a diamond. What better way to show someone that you care for them and that your love is not flawed! For centuries though these gems were only available to kings and nobles. The supreme gem needed to be held for the highest person in the land. Love transcends gem value, but while you are at it you might as well show them that you love them with the top quality in all of the gems.

It would be safe to say that if these gems did not cost as much as they do then they would be not sought after highly.
