The Process
The process that they have been using is called CVD. CVD stands for chemical vapor deposition. This is just new technology because growing them larger than three carats is something that is difficult to do currently. Right now, it takes about one day to make a 1/3 carat diamond. The process of CVD should be able to make diamonds that are 300 carats and one inch in size. This is an extremely large goal that could create a very sought after diamond. It is worth it to keep an eye on the process because it could have some very large advances.
The Differences in Diamonds
The way natural diamonds are colored depends on what other materials are present in the diamond besides carbon. Natural diamonds can range from clear to different hues of color. Right now the synthetic diamonds have ranged in the area of yellow to brown. The big goal for this technology is to create colorless diamonds. However, right now, the research and goal is too lofty, and they are too expensive to make. Natural diamonds also tend to have more defects than the synthetic made diamonds do. Outside of that there is really not much difference in what you can find in nature and what has been built in a lab.
The Pricing
The costs of synthetic diamonds are generally low. However, the price in the markets might change depending on how they are listed. If the market gets flooded with all sorts of sizes and styles, and there are enough to go around, then the prices will naturally fall. This could take some steam out of the market. It could also take away some of the luster of the diamonds. If too many people have the big diamonds and the different styles then naturally they will fall out of fashion. This could lead to changes in how people see diamonds and which directions they want their diamonds to go.
