Carat vs. Karat

Carat

When you talk about carats then you are talking about diamonds. There are other gems that are weighed using this measurement. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. To put this in perspective of pounds, in order to get one pound you must have 453 grams, or 453,000 milligrams. This is why you should not think of diamonds in pounds. Diamonds are not as heavy as you might think. Even the larger diamonds are relatively light. However, it does not matter how heavy they are, all that matters is that it is large and clear. Karat

Whenever you talk about karats then you will be talking about gold. A karat is actually a unit of purity, which is why you say 24 karat pure gold. Whenever gold is made into jewelry it is often times mixed with other elements like silver or copper. Pure gold is generally too soft. Every karat is equal to 1/24th of the whole. If your jewelry is made up of 14 parts of gold and 10 parts of silver then you have a piece of jewelry that is 14-karat gold. This unit of purity first came about when discussing gold coins that were used as currency. This is not actually a unit of weight, but people still get them confused.

Just Pay Attention

You cannot talk about karats when dealing with diamonds because you are not mixing anything with these diamonds for purity’s sake. It is difficult to talk about carats with gold because you do not care about the heaviness as much as the purity. Just make sure that you remember this when you are going to buy either item. If you are dealing with a jeweler that has these two issues confused then you probably should walk away because they do not know what they are doing.
